More details
Should your Children avoid the thumb or the dummy?
Many parents of thumb-sucking babies wonder whether they should replace the thumb with a dummy, or avoid both altogether. To date, research on the subject has not shown that one is preferable to the other. Plus, although parents can encourage a baby to suck a dummy rather than his thumb, we can never control which our Children will prefer.
The advantages and disadvantages of dummy use and thumb sucking are not always perfectly clear. So there are some general questions for parents to think about. The advantages of a dummy include the ability to control when your Children is allowed to use it or to remove it when it is no longer appropriate. But a young Children who uses a dummy for too long may be more susceptible to Ear-Nose-Throat problems.
The good thing about the thumb is that it doesn't interfere with milk feeding. And Children usually stop on their own between the ages of 3 and 5. But if thumb-sucking becomes a habit after the age of 4, the Children may develop dental problems. Plus, it can be more difficult for Children to stop sucking their thumb than using a dummy.
Conclusion: both dummies and thumbs are perfectly acceptable temporary solutions to help children fall asleep, but from the age of 4 onwards, it's time to think about stopping both. A masticator such as the one designed by Machouyou can be an excellent weaning solution to keep your toddler's mouth busy rather than letting him grasp his thumb. One hour a day will help him gradually leave his thumb or dummy behind, and avoid orthodontic complications later on.
