Star of Bethlehem: the Bach Flower of comfort
Scientists call it "Star of Bethlehem", "Ornithogale umbellate" or "Ornithogalum umbellatum", but amateur botanists like to call it "Eleven o'clock Lady". Why do they call it this? Quite simply because the flowers of this small, immaculately white spring plant only open when the Sun is at its brightest. They close again at dusk or when it's raining. Another special feature is its harmonious, stable geometry, the only flower to have six petals.
Common throughout Europe, and particularly in France, the umbellate ornithogale thrives particularly well in clay soils. It is often found in meadows and along roadsides, where it grows, tenderly cradled by the Sun's rays. It can also be found as an ornamental plant in gardens, where its star-shaped flowers are perfect ornaments. It grows in umbels, which appear from May onwards. Each stem has between 5 and 15 flowers. This plant has an ovate bulb and grows to between 10 and 30 cm tall, depending on the Environment in which it is grown. It thrives in cool, shady conditions, although flowering is encouraged by the Sun.
