How can I help to re-educate my perineum after giving birth?
Rehabilitation of the perineum after childbirth is essential for many women in order to recover the functionality and tone of this part of the body. The perineum is a set of muscles located between the vagina and the anus, supporting the internal genital organs such as the bladder, uterus and rectum. Unfortunately, many changes occur during pregnancy and childbirth , whichcan lead to problems such as urinary incontinence and bladder weakness. Childbirth can cause the pelvic floor and perineum to relax due to the overstretching and intense contractions these muscles undergo during labour. This can lead to problems such as urinary incontinence, organ descent and loss of vaginal tone. Fortunately, there are effective ways to help re-educate the perineum after childbirth.
Perineal re-education can be carried out with the professional help of a physiotherapist, midwife or specialist physiotherapist. These professionals use various techniques to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles and improve urinary continence. One of the most common techniques is the use of Kegel exercises, which consist of contractions and relaxations of the pelvic floor muscles. Kegel exercises can be performed by contracting and relaxing the perineal muscles, concentrating the effort on the pelvic floor muscles. It is important to learn how to perform these exercises correctly in order to achieve optimum results. The use of biofeedback, which involves using a vaginal or anal probe to measure muscle activity, can help guide the patient through the correct movements. As well as Kegel exercises, there are other methods to help re-educate the perineum. Electrostimulation uses electrodes placed on the skin of the abdomen and thighs to stimulate the pelvic floor muscles and encourage their contraction. This technique can be combined with manual exercises to strengthen the muscles. Geisha balls, also known as Kegel balls, can be used to strengthen the muscles of the perineum. These balls, inserted into the vagina, force the pelvic floor muscles to contract to hold them in place. This helps to strengthen the perineal muscles and improve vaginal tone.
As well as exercises and techniques, it's also important toadopt a healthy lifestyle to help re-educate the perineum after childbirth. Maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding constipation by eating a balanced diet rich in fibre, and practising gentle physical activities such as pilates or toning gymnastics can all help to strengthen the pelvic floor. It is advisable to start reeducating the perineum a few weeks after giving birth, when the woman's body is ready. It is also important to consult a specialised Professional for personalised advice tailored to each patient.
